Measuring What Matters: Aligning Assessment Practices with the Modern World
BY Prof. Katie Martin
Synopsis
Many vision statements highlight the goal of developing critical thinkers, innovators, collaborators, and life-ready learners, yet our assessments too often measure memorization, completion, and compliance.
The industrial-age system of education has focused on measuring seat time, grade-point averages, and standardized test scores.
This keynote will center on the skills that matter most and provide models and examples in diverse contexts for how to align desired outcomes and assess progress, growth, and achievement in a post-industrial educational system in order to better prepare all learners for the modern world.
Evolving Education: Shifting to a Learner-Centered Paradigm
BY Prof. Katie Martin
Synopsis
To meet the needs of learners in diverse learning environments and align schools with the world we live in, there is a need to embrace new mindsets about learning, and evolve our approaches to make these shifts across diverse classrooms.
Making these shifts requires more than learning about the latest technology or digitizing learning experiences. Instead, it is about us, as educators, evolving to meet the needs of those we serve.
Katie has worked with educators around the world and visited over 1,000 classrooms and this keynote will highlight what is possible when we prioritize whole child outcomes, codesign authentic and personalized learning experiences, and create the enabling conditions for meaningful change.
It’s Not More, It's Different: Designing Empowering Learning Experiences For All Learners
BY Prof. Katie Martin
Synopsis
We spend too much time thinking about what young people can’t do and creating systems to control rather than raising the bar and providing support to get to our desired outcomes. Yet, when you raise the bar for learners, they often exceed it.
There are many unknowns in the near future, but we know that if learners don’t feel seen for who they are and valued for the unique gifts they bring, we will fail to create opportunities for all individuals to reach their full potential. It is crucial that we focus on how to co-design meaningful experiences, connect with learners as individuals, and help them develop skills to navigate their world today and in the future.
This interactive masterclass is designed to reflect on your experiences and deepen your understanding of what is possible when we believe in learners, design for learning, not control, and create the conditions for authentic and purposeful learning. The morning session begins with a self-assessment and opportunities to set goals and explore new and different strategies based on your needs. In the afternoon, we will engage in collaborative activities to design learning experiences that you can use immediately to accelerate the shift to effective and empowering learning experiences for all students.
