4 Meaningful Purposes of Assessment

BY Dr. Marie Alcock

Synopsis

Not all assessments are the same. There are four different purposes for each design and they meet different student needs. How do we decide when to use each design? Dr. Marie Hubley Alcock breaks down the purposes for activities and assessments through drill and practice, rehearsals, authentic assessments, and reflections. The idea is that ALL purposes are important for student success – in this presentation we explore how we design our classroom to balance and achieve them all.

Objectives and Outcomes:
1. A compelling why for all four types of assessments
2. Definition of the four purposes and how they relate to one another,
3. Explore a sample of how they can work together in a classroom (drill and practice leading to authentic experiences),
4. How to monitor and support these assessments in a classroom setting

How To Design Purposeful Assessments

BY Dr. Marie Alcock

Synopsis

How do we design assessments that have accountability? We mean assessments that cannot simply be looked up online or have an app complete them. We know we cannot always be in the room – so what do we do now? The solution is in aligning assessments to clear purposes. In this time of evolving learning environments, it has become increasingly important that our assessment designs be intentional and clear. How do we ensure accountability for our students during on-site, off-site and / or on-line learning? In this interactive and exciting session, participants will explore how to:

Objectives and Outcomes:

‣ CREATE assessments that provide evidence of learning on four tiers:
1. drill and practice
2. rehearsal
3. authentic performance
4. reflection

‣ APPLY knowledge of the purposes, characteristics, and appropriate uses of different types of assessments (e.g., pre-assessment, formative, summative, informal, formal, progress monitoring, and performance) to design assessments, including use of clear success criteria and a focus on accountability.

‣ USE reflection and framing the learning to increase accountability in all assessments

‣ DESIGN demonstrations of learning that reveal what matters most: growth of our learners in mastering standards, growth of our learners in developing self-reliance and accountability, and the growth of our learners in personalized goal setting.

‣ IDENTIFY three types of assessments – evidence of standards, evidence of curriculum, evidence of instruction
1. Assessment evidence of standards – how to guide students using their own data to improve their own performance
2. Assessment evidence of curriculum – how to design identity based contexts that are meaningful and worthy
3. Assessment evidence of instruction – how to design and facilitate the process of learning and give meaningful feedback to learners so they are able to individualize and differentiate their own learning strategies

‣ CRAFT modern assessments

‣ PLACE feedback systems on the front burner both from teachers and from learners

‣ DEVELOP meaningful assessments and corresponding feedback approaches

The Five Types of Effective Classroom Differentiation

BY Dr. Marie Alcock

Synopsis

We all want to differentiate. But how do we choose what kind to use and when? Based on work by Carol Ann Tomilinson and Marie Hubley Alcock, this session will define all 5 types of differentiation and when they are most effective for students. The point is to not overwhelm teachers with “having to differentiate everything all of the time” rather to focus on the most efficient and effective ways for all students in the classroom setting.

Objectives and Outcomes:
‣ Identify five types of differentiation
‣ Content
‣ Skills
‣ Assessment
‣ Instructional Strategies
‣ Learning Strategies
‣ Identify when each type of differentiation is most effective and the brain science behind each type.
‣ Design demonstrations of learning that can be differentiated efficiently and effectively for each type of situation
‣ Craft placeholders for each type of differentiation to be used in specific learning settings

*Please note that not all hours of the masterclass will be made up of videos. The total duration of the video presentations varies for each masterclass. Time allocated for activities is inclusive within the total masterclass duration.
