Cognitive Stoplights And Sticky Notes: Creating Environments Promoting Long-Lasting Learning

BY Prof. John Almarode

Synopsis

Getting students engaged in their learning and keeping them engaged is a significant challenge in today’s classrooms. However, once they are engaged, how do we improve the retention, retrieval, and transfer of knowledge, understandings, and skills. Just as we use sticky notes to prompt our own memory, our cognitive architecture uses cognitive sticky notes to prompt the recall of classroom content. In addition, some of our students encounter barriers to learning that, quite frankly, put a red light up for learning. For the best student learning outcomes, we need to create an environment that changes that red light to a green light.

This keynote explores the recent research on how we learn and what factors are associated with better student learning outcomes. Each participant will walk away, raring to go, with instant ideas and strategies for sticky notes and green lights!

From Snorkelers to Scuba Divers - Finding the Right Amount of Rigor for Learners

BY Prof. John Almarode

Synopsis

Is this going to be on the test? Why do we have to know this? Is this for a grade? Can you tell me what I need to do to get this right? These questions haunt each and every teacher that is on the receiving end of such inquiry. When inspired and passionate teachers create an environment that fosters and nurtures engagement, questions like these evaporate from our schools and classrooms while our students deep dive into learning.

Over the past fifteen years, the science of learning has provided many insights into how we think. Furthermore, these promising principles provide a starting point for inspired and passionate teachers to build the capacity in learners to see themselves as their own teachers.

This keynote shows you how! Participants will experience targeted and specific strategies for finding the right level of rigor, striking the ideal balance between surface and deep learning, and identifying the perfect level of challenge for each student.

Participants will take part in an edge-of-your-seat experience that models the promising principles from science of learning for deep thinking and understanding: simple to complex, concrete to abstract, and the idea that memory is the residue of thought.

Tools for Teaching and Learning – Clarity for Learning

BY Prof. John Almarode

Synopsis

This masterclass unpacks what is meant by clarity for learning. Teachers will take an in-depth look at how to make learning visible to each and every student in the classroom. This action-packed, edge of your learning experience builds understanding of the relationship between teacher clarity and student learning in my classroom. By practicing what we preach, participants will take part in an “out of your seat and on your feet” experience that models the brain rules for deep thinking and understanding: simple to complex, concrete to abstract, and students only remember what they think about.

This masterclass will address classroom and student engagement in a cognitively rich environment making sure that students remain engaged in relevant content, regardless of the medium. Topics include goals, learning intentions, success criteria, opportunities to respond, and effective feedback.

*Please note that not all hours of the masterclass will be made up of videos. The total duration of the video presentations varies for each masterclass. Time allocated for activities is inclusive within the total masterclass duration.

The Science of How We Learn

BY Prof. John Almarode

Synopsis

Our schools and classrooms always face the challenge of fostering, nurturing, and sustaining student engagement and learning. While challenging for many different reasons, one consistent aspect of teaching and learning is the science behind how our students learn. Whether in the living room or laboratory, the couch or the classroom, the principles of how our students learn remain consistent AND constant. This highly engaging masterclass looks the fundamental principles of how our students learn and translates them into highly practical strategies for learning in any context.

Learning Intention:
We will learn how the principles behind how we learn and translate into potential strategies for teaching and learning.

Success Criteria:
We will know it has been a successful learning experience when:
1. We can describe the key principles behind how our students learn.
2. We can compare and contrast the contextual variables of synchronous and asynchronous learning.
3. We can integrate the principles behind how we learn into specific strategies that support learning in any context.
4. We can develop ways to assess students in learning to determine our impact on learning.

*Please note that not all hours of the masterclass will be made up of videos. The total duration of the video presentations varies for each masterclass. Time allocated for activities is inclusive within the total masterclass duration.
