Preparing The Structural Nest For Modern Learning: Crafting Schedules, Virtual And Physical Spaces, Grouping Patterns

BY Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs

Synopsis

What are the exciting possibilities for providing a supportive structural nest to provide quality learning experiences? In the past, many of our written and unwritten policies have been based on habit. (We have always had this schedule. We have always been self-contained. We always group our kids by grade level. We only meet in departments) instead of what is in the best interest of learners. Given how we are reconsidering these decisions given the current increase in online learning and the possibilities for staggered schedules and grouping of learners. Dr. Jacobs will lay out options for you to consider that are customized for your setting, but most importantly best support your current learners. The keynote will be packed with marvelous examples from around the world to inform your decisions.

Transformative Leadership: Inspire And Create Innovative Design Plans For Your School

BY Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs

Synopsis

This exciting 4-hour masterclass is made up of 4 sessions.

Sessions 1 and 2:

What skills and dispositions inform leaders to inspire, transform and create innovation in a school setting? What are the possibilities for shifting an organization to a contemporary school setting? What are the three arenas for decision making? How can leaders distribute decision making effectively to create modern and engaging learning environments? How can we involve students, parents and community stakeholders in the process of transformation?

In order to support the cultivation of innovative and thoughtful learners we need leaders to have modern skills sets, knowledge, strategies, and dispositions to lead the transformation of our schools. Based on her book (co-authored with Marie Alcock), Bold Moves for Schools: How to Create Remarkable Learning Environments, Dr. Jacobs will guide you on how to transform your school setting to respond to the specific needs of your “right-now” learners. We will focus on three arenas for planning choices: our mission and culture, the design of our learning experiences, and our program structures. Participants will leave with a working set of next steps to create an innovation design team at their setting to operationalize the vision for your school. Key will be the cultivation of a culture for making a shift to a modern learning environment and the disposition necessary for lateral leadership that transforms the motivation and engagement of all members of the school community.

Sessions 3 and 4:

How can we create a learning environment with the program structures best suited to support modern learning? Transformative leadership needs to not only consider the culture and program but the fundamental structures that support modern learning.

We will investigate the expanding the array of scheduling options, virtual and on-site programs, the rethinking of existing learning spaces, the possibilities for future architectural choices, the ways we can group your learners for maximum benefit, strategies for grouping personnel beyond the silos of departments and grade levels, and developing global networks as partners. Transforming a learning environment opens up the possibilities for dynamic and creative curriculum and teaching. Jacobs will share examples of how design thinking informs the action planning process and how to form an effective design team. She will show ways to craft differentiated professional development plans to engage faculty and administration in the design process. Strategies for engaging students, boards of directors, and community stakeholders will be central to the design team planning process. Dr. Jacobs will share examples of different school and their entry points in transforming the learning environment for students.

Proposed outcomes participants will leave with:
